About this practice

Mission Australia's Lived Expertise Practice Framework provides a comprehensive, structured approach to professional lived expertise service delivery. Built around a core focus of 'Mastering Vulnerability' and a core process of 'Being With', the framework defines five distinct practice domains: Shared Experiences, Learn With and From Each Other, To Challenge and Be Challenged, Negotiate Personal Power, and Live Beyond. Each domain includes guiding principles, enabling and not-enabling practice indicators, and scenario-based examples that distinguish novice from advanced practitioner capability. The framework differentiates lived expertise practice from case management — positioning it as a narrative, relationship-based discipline that fosters self-direction, self-advocacy, and a life beyond adversity rather than dependence on services. It is suitable for stand-alone lived expertise service delivery or in conjunction with clinical, allied health, and community support approaches.
